Hidden Problems of An Old Water Heater

If a house is ten years old or close to it chances are the water heater is just as old. If the water heater has never been replaced then it is time for that to happen. The average water heater, in ideal conditions, only lasts about 10 years. Most places don’t have ideal conditions and replacing a water heater should take place sooner.

An old water heater could sprout a leak or even crack as it is used beyond its optimal time. But what if there are no problems? Should replacing a water heater still be an option?

Like anything with a expired warranty there is nothing saying that it will continue to run smoothly. It may be less efficient than it used to which means higher utility bills. Maybe it doesn’t heat as well as it used to or there is less hot water than normal. These are all signs of an old water heater.

Replacing a water heater is not a huge expense or even expensive compared to waiting. Waiting until the tank ruptures could mean flood damage. This is the real cost of a water heater that expires. If water gets into the house there is a high chance of having growth, damage fixtures, and major renovation needed.

Jd Plumbing, Heating & Air Coniditoning owner John Dietz had this to say “Water Heaters do not have to be very expensive to replace. The large costs people think of come from waiting too long and the water heater fails, that’s when it gets expensive.”

Always check the age of the water heater in a house using the serial number on it. If the house has never had its water heater replaced and its nearing or more than ten years old it is almost a guarantee that it needs to be replaced.
