If the electric grid goes down and you have electric heating, your heater will not work. Even gas heaters will not work without the electricity to provide the spark to light the gas. How do you plan to keep your family warm?

There are plenty of ways to heat your home off the grid. Most fireplaces now are built for show, not for heating, but a wood heater on the hearth would work. Solar power is another option.

Most people think that a small wood heater will not keep you warm, but that is incorrect. A wood heater can keep a 1,500 square foot home comfortably warm in the winter. More important than the size of the heater is how well the home is insulated. Sealing all the cracks around the windows and doors is extremely important. Also try sealing off rooms that you do not use. No need to try and keep all the rooms in a house warm when you only use a few.

If you live in warmer climates, your concern may be keeping cool in the summer. Zone Air Conditioning has started to become popular. It not only saves energy, but the temperature can be regulated by room. Keep one room at 72 degrees and the other at 79 degrees.

If the power is out and you have no electricity to run the air conditioning, try a small, battery operated misting fan like they sell at most hardware stores. Even a cooling towel like many athletes wear around their neck works well. There are many different ways to keep cool.

And about keeping safe…A shotgun behind the front door is the natural choice, but there are plenty of other options. It is nice to have a gun nut as a neighbor when TSHTF, but with small children, sometimes guns are not a safe option for your home.
