(Newswire.net — November 26, 2014) Bridgetown, ST. MICHAEL — Barbados Tourism Encyclopedia published their new blog post today: A Visit to the Lion of Gun Hill Signal Station Barbados. This blog post is a visit to the lookout and historic garrison at Gun Hill, a heritage signal station and communication hub throughout the British occupation of Barbados.

Barbados Tourism Encyclopedia COO, Kathy-Lynn Ward gives a detailed account of the history of the station and recounts the story of the soldiers who, in their spare time, carved a larger than life lion out of a single piece of coral. The lion stands in a proud and majestic pose in the hillside just below the station, looking out as the signal guards did some centuries past.

A tour of the station with Ward relives the past and anticipates what it might have been like to be stationed here some centuries ago. Ward takes the reader with her into the past, “Here you get a sense of what daily life was like for the soldiers stationed at the station. Signage in the small kitchen tells of the diet and culinary habits of the British troops stationed here. The kitchen contained its own fire hearth and chimney along with a spit fire.”

Amongst the historic treasure are relics of daily life: “A map dated 1846 shows the location of the other Barbados signal stations and it’s clear the vital role that this central station played in relaying messages across the island.”
