(Newswire.net — January 2, 2015) WALNUT, CA — Need a New Year’s resolution for 2015? Family-owned company Cate’s Garden is suggesting something that will take care not only of you in the coming year, but of your entire family and the environment.

And it’s not hard or expensive, company owners say.

According to Cate’s Garden co-owner Chris Molnar, “New Year’s resolutions are generally about losing weight, giving up smoking, spending more time with your kids … all very important things. But one easy idea is to start composting, and it can be done in your own back yard.”

Why composting? “Composting recycles what you’ve already used You’re already throwing your trash away. But if you have a compost pile on your property, you’re recycling,” Chris explains. “It reduces landfill, provides you with free lawn and garden fertilizer, and helps teach your children valuable lessons in taking care of the earth. After all, they only have one earth to live on!”

Many people are worried that composting is difficult, smelly and will overtake their entire yard. “Not true,” Chris asserts. “Composting only requires a few easy steps. And it’s not expensive to start up your own compost heap. Everything can even be done for free.”

Cate’s Garden owners have also revealed what they call “a few myths” about composting.

Myth #1: “Composting smells bad.” In fact, with the proper ratio of dry to wet scrap materials, “your compost pile should not have a smell at all. If it does, there are easy things you can do to fix that,” says Chris.

Myth #2: “Composting is hard to do. It’s constant work.” Actually, it’s easier than gardening, according to those who practice it. It “basically involves having a pile about 4 ft x 4 ft, and throwing your kitchen and yard scraps into it. You can leave it, and it’ll eventually decompose into soil. You can do things to speed up the process, such as checking the temperature, turning it and adding water. This is easy and takes a couple minutes a week to do,” Chris reveals.

Myth #3:  “Composting involves heavy start-up costs.” “You may have seen compost containers and thermometers going for high prices,” says Chris. “But you can even compost in a large-size outdoor garbage can. You can build your own from some plywood. You can even just dump it in a corner of your yard.”

So how do you get started? Cate’s Garden offers the following tips:

  • Find out whether your city has a recycling incentives program that offers a discount on composting containers. These may be had for as little as $25 or $50 in some locales.
  • Know how to compost. Cate’s Garden offers a simple startup guide, “The Dirt on Composting: A Comprehensive Guide to Backyard Composting,” on its website, Catesgarden.com.
  • Use a reliable thermometer so that you know the temperature inside your compost pile. This simply monitors how slow or how fast your pile is working. Cate’s Garden offers a hermetically sealed, stainless steel thermometer on its website.
  • Get kids, and even your child’s school, in on the fun. A compost pile in a class garden can be a great educational tool and get children involved in teamwork, according to Cate’s Garden owners.
  • Use finished compost as free fertilizer and mulch in and around your vegetable garden, fruit garden, fruit trees and lawn.

“You’ll be surprised how easy it is to compost,” says Chris. “And you’ll be able to feel good about this resolution, because you’re reducing your carbon footprint AND saving time and money.”
