(Newswire.net — May 20, 2015) Singapore, Singapore — Singapore American School takes pride in offering leading world-class education to its students. Among the variety of programs that sets the school apart is its Authors and Illustrators-In-Residence Program that attracts world-renowned authors and artists to work directly with students and teachers. Among the renowned authors and illustrators who have participated in the program is Orbis Pictus Winner for Outstanding Children’s Nonfiction author, Candace Fleming, who received this esteemed award for her latest book, The Family Romanov, and was a speaker at the iCreate Conference hosted at SAS.

The Authors and Illustrators-In-Residence Program is funded through donations and is sponsored by the SAS PTA, linking the school’s desired learning outcomes (DSLOs) with a unique learning opportunity that is beneficial, achievable, and measurable. Students receive lessons that have been collaborated on by the in- residence illustrator or author and instructor that actively engage them in the learning process and give them first-hand exposure to the field of illustration and writing. This approach is effective as a project-based learning opportunity. When possible the school brings together the professional collaborators at the same time to provide after school professional developmental opportunities for SAS parents and teachers.

For the first time since it’s inception the Authors and Illustrators-In-Residence Program has been made available to the SAS Early Childhood Center to extend these learning opportunities to the youngest attendees of the school. The desired learning outcomes are addressed and incorporated into the learning plans that are collaborated on by the ECC teaching teams and visiting author or illustrator. The same level of attention is provided to those in the ECC Program as with the older students, providing a learning opportunity that is developmentally appropriate.

One of the current participants in the Authors and Illustrators-In-Residence Program is Simon and Schuster author Candace Fleming whose most recent book, The Family Romanov. She is also an anticipated winner for one of this year’s Newbery Awards. Fleming is the author of more than 35 fiction and nonfiction books including The Lincolns (Boston Globe- Horn Book Award), Amelia Lost: The Life and Disappearance of Amelia Earhart (Golden Kite Award), and Boxes for Katje (California Young Reader Medal). As part of the Authors and Illustrators-In- Residence Program she will be working directly with students and teachers to share her unique perspectives and experiences as an author.

With this visionary program Singapore American School continues to demonstrate its dedication to developing and furthering education.  If you would like to learn more about the Authors and Illustrators-In-Residence Program at Singapore American School or to make a donation to the SAS PTA to help fund the program, visit the school website.
