(Newswire.net — May 29, 2015) — Arianna Huffington, the founder of The Huffington Post, is promoting a crowdfunding project to empower young female Greek storytellers. The winner gets to attend a live HuffPost Show or HuffPost Live taping session & copy of her latest book.
Starting now until July 1st 2015, Arianna Huffington, Chime For Change, and The Thomson Foundation will be working hard to raise money for their new crowdfunding campaign, CHIME for Women Storytellers in Greece.
The goal of the campaign is to help young Greek women journalists tell their stories and the stories of their communities, friends and families. Twelve female journalists will be invited to participate in a five-day workshop and receive ongoing mentoring and publishing opportunities, including on The Huffington Post.
According to Truthout, Greece has seen the sharpest decline of any country in Freedom House’s annual press freedom index. Since 2009, Greece has plummeted into the “partly free” category in the 2013 rankings and fell even further, to 92nd place worldwide as of 2014. This leaves Greece in last place in the entire European Union. Additionally, Greece has fallen to 99th place worldwide in the 2014 World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters without Borders, dropping from 84th place the previous year and falling behind countries such as Zambia, Malawi and Kyrgyzstan.
With the decline of free press in Greece and other challenges, Huffington believes that it’s essential for for women’s voices to be a part of the journalism resurgence.
“As a girl growing up in Athens, I grew up around journalism and stories. I loved writing, and my father was a journalist, so I grew up on the romance of the profession.”, said Huffington.
The CHIME For Women Storytellers in Greece Campaign has a goal of crowdfunding a total of $26,900, so that CHIME and The Thompson Foundation can jump-start the careers of 12 lucky young women journalists in Greece.
For a limited time, anyone who donates above a certain threshold is entered to win a live taping of the HuffPost Show in LA or HuffPost Live in NYC, plus a copy of Arianna Huffington’s latest book.
To enter the contest, anyone can donate funds to Arianna Huffington’s contest campaign from 6/29 at 2pm ET to 7/1 at 11:59:59am ET.
