(Newswire.net — December 16, 2016) Orlando, FL — Being overweight or obese may lead to many health complications. It can also worsen certain medical conditions such as gout, lupus, fibromyalgia, and arthritis. There are many things to learn about the condition, and one is its connection with arthritis.

Experts reveal osteoarthritis may be logically linked with obesity. Some of the more common conditions associated with this weight problem are diabetes or heart disease. However, it seems that it is also closely connected with arthritis.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2 out of 3 individuals in the United States are either obese or overweight. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, and there are even about 27 million Americans who suffer from the condition.

It is believed that the greater the weight, the more stress is being placed on the joints. The joints are also more likely to be susceptible to wear and tear or damage.

Eric Matteson, MD, Chair of the Rheumatology Division at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, reveals that weight plays a significant role in joint stress. Overweight individuals are thought to be more prone to placing stress on the weight-bearing joints, such as the hips and knees.

Dr. Matteson added that around 4 pounds of extra pressure on the knees are exerted with each pound of excess weight. Overweight individuals are thought to be more susceptible to developing arthritis.

In addition to the extra weight, which may cause damage, the fat itself is also believed to release pro-inflammatory chemicals.

According to Jeffrey N. Katz, MD, a Professor of Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, these pro-inflammatory chemicals may significantly influence osteoarthritis development.

David Felson, MD, a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Boston University School of Medicine, states that people do not walk on hands, thus, there is probably something manufactured by the fat cells that results in a more rapid joint breakdown.

Today, individuals who suffer from arthritis are turning to the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These pharmaceutical drugs are widely known to help ease pain and improve the mobility of individuals who suffer from arthritis pain.

However, these medications may also lead to side effects.  There are many sufferers who turn to the use of natural alternatives, such as glucosamine.

Glucosamine naturally occurs in the body. It is believed to be effective in helping to improve overall joint health.
