( — January 30, 2017) Orlando, FL — Milk thistle is one of the natural alternatives that many people turn to in hope to fight against certain conditions. Its potential effects are believed to be due to therapeutic agents it contains, such as one called silymarin.

Researchers study the effects of silymarin on ulcerative colitis. There are many medical conditions today that affect millions of people. There are those who use pharmaceutical drugs while others turn to surgical procedures.

There are various types of medications available for fighting ulcerative colitis. While they may be helpful, it is important to consider the potential side effects they may cause.

One of the possible reasons is that pharmaceutical drugs often contain substances that the human body finds foreign. Due to the foreign nature of these substances, the body’s defense mechanism activates.

When this happens, it leads to various adverse effects. While side effects do not happen to everyone, the risk is there and may affect anyone who takes these medications.

For this reason, many prefer the use of natural alternatives, such as milk thistle. One of the best things about turning to this option is that it has the potential to offer a variety of health benefits.

According to a new clinical trial, the silymarin in milk thistle has the potential to improve the remission rate in sufferers of ulcerative colitis.

Statistics show that around one million individuals in the United States suffer from ulcerative colitis. This double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled study has 80 participants with ulcerative colitis.

The participants were in remission and they were randomly selected to receive 140 mg of silimarin on a daily basis for six months. There was also a placebo group.

In the study, the researchers evaluated the frequency of the flare-up linked with the condition. Hemoglobin was checked to evaluate anemia and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) to measure systemic inflammation and disease activity index.

It was found that there was an increase in hemoglobin and a decrease in ESR in the group dosed with silymarin. The improvement was not observed in the placebo group.

The researchers further revealed that there was a reduction in disease activity index in the silymarin group. Further, there was a complete remission in the 35 out of the 38 subjects under the silymarin group without flare-up after six months.

In the placebo group, on the other hand, there were only 21 out of 32 patients who experienced such an improvement. The researchers suggest that silymarin could potentially be helpful to individuals with ulcerative colitis in maintaining remission.

The possible therapeutic effects of silymarin may be obtained through milk thistle seed extract supplementation. One of the most reputable manufacturers of milk thistle is Divine Bounty.

Divine Bounty’s Milk Thistle Seed Extract supplement contains 1200 mg of milk thistle per capsule. It is free from unwanted ingredients, such as soy, GMO, preservatives, or artificial ingredients.

One of the best features offered by this product is that it contains 120 capsules per bottle. It is worth mentioning that other brands only contain around 60 capsules, and this makes Divine Bounty’s Milk Thistle Seed Extract supplement a better value.
