(Newswire.net — May 25, 2017) Orlando, FL — Arthritis is a painful and debilitating condition and individuals with arthritis are also susceptible to a variety of complications.

Research reveals that arthritis may be associated with suicide attempts. Having this painful condition itself is already a struggle due to the symptoms. It is essential for sufferers to ensure that they increase their immunity against the development of certain diseases and disorders.

Suicide has been affecting many people from around the world today. There are factors believed to contribute to the development of this psychological condition.

According to research, one of the risk factors of the susceptibility of suicide attempts in individuals with arthritis is history of childhood adversities, such as sexual abuse and parental domestic violence.

The research study reveals that 1 in 26 women with arthritis has resorted to attempted suicide. This finding has been compared to 1 in 50 male sufferers of arthritis.

According to the recently conducted study from the University of Toronto, women who suffered from arthritis experienced an increased prevalence of lifetime suicide attempts comparing to women without the condition.

The study also revealed that individuals with arthritis had higher odds of suicide attempts by 46% than those without the condition. The findings were the same even when adjustments were made in certain factors, such as income, age, history of mental disorders, and chronic pain. Esme Fuller-Thomson, Sandra Rotman Endowed Chair at University of Toronto’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work & Institute for Life Course & Aging was the lead author of the study.

The researchers reveal that in adult sufferers of arthritis, it was found that those who suffered from sexual abuse or chronic parental domestic violence during their childhood were more than three times more susceptible to the chance of suicide attempts than those who did not suffer from childhood adversities. They also added that the magnitude of these associations with the attempts of suicide was comparable to that linked with depression, which is the most common risk factor in suicide attempts.

Natasha Ramzan, a recent MSW graduate of the University of Toronto, also states that other factors connecting suicide attempts and arthritis include the history of alcohol or drug dependence as well as anxiety disorders. It was also found that arthritis sufferers who were less financially stable, less educated, and younger, had increased susceptibility to suicide attempts.

Individuals with arthritis often resort to a variety of measures to improve their pain and overall condition. Pharmaceutical drugs and natural alternatives are the most popular options for arthritis sufferers.

One of these natural alternatives is glucosamine, which is believed to help repair cartilage damage. It also offers the potential to improve overall joint cartilage health.
