(Newswire.net — June 1, 2017) Orlando, FL — There are many measures people can resort to in improving their overall heart health, such as following a healthy diet and lifestyle. There are also natural alternatives such as turmeric that may also be beneficial for the well-being of the heart.

Curcumin may be nature’s gift for heart health. Curcumin is a phytochemical found in turmeric, which is one of the oldest spices. This bioactive ingredient is thought to be responsible for many of turmeric’s potential health benefits.

The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry published a study that tried to determine the effects of turmeric on type 2 diabetes as well as atherosclerotic heart disease, which is a deadly complication of diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association has its own journal called Diabetes Care. It is where the organization published its study called a “Reduction of atherogenic risk in patients with type 2 diabetes by curcuminoid extract: a randomized controlled trial”.

The researchers found that the phytochemical is 100% effective in preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes. The participants of the study were pre-diabetics who underwent a six-month curcumin intervention.

In another double-blinded, placebo-controlled, and 6-month randomized clinical trial in Thailand, there were 226 participants with type 2 diabetes. The researchers divided them into two groups and they aimed at determining the effects of curcumin in atherosclerosis prevention.

The researchers found that those who took curcumin achieved liver function improvement. Turmeric has long been believed to have beneficial properties for the liver, therefore the findings of the study did not come as a surprise at all.

According to researchers, there was also a decrease in BMI, weight circumference, blood glucose profiles, body weight, and lipid profiles. Individuals who took curcumin also experienced an increase in HDL-C.

The researchers concluded that curcumin may potentially offer lasting health benefits without causing adverse effects.

Other studies also demonstrate that curcumin may cause a decrease in fasting plasma glucose, LDL-C, total cholesterol, and glycated red blood cells.

Curcumin can be obtained through supplementation. Individuals who want to take advantage of the possible benefits of this phytochemical may want to consider utilizing curcumin supplements.

There are consumers who incorporate turmeric powder in preparing their dishes and beverages. Using this spice in the kitchen could be a great idea considering that it has a potent flavor, a deep yellow orange-color, and may offer therapeutic properties.

One of the potential benefits in using supplements is that they normally contain higher levels of the phytochemical’s properties. This includes its antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, antibiotic, and anti-carcinogenic properties.
