Research Suggests Depression May Frequently Occur With Joint Diseases

(Newswire.net — June 1, 2017) Orlando, FL — Arthritis and depression are two different conditions, but they have certain similarities. One of these similarities is their ability to make the everyday life of sufferers a struggle. Unfortunately, it seems that these two conditions may have the potential to co-occur.

Research suggests that depression may frequently co-occur with joint diseases. Depression and joint diseases both may cause many undesirable consequences in the overall health and quality of life of sufferers.

The researchers from the University of Basel and the Ruhr-University Bochum conducted a study. The results were based on the data involving 14,300 individuals living in Switzerland. These results were also published in the Frontiers in Public Health, a scientific journal.

According to statistics, depression is one of the top risks in health and it also affects 350 million people around the world.

In Switzerland, there are about 400,00 individuals who suffer from this psychological condition every year. Several studies in many countries worldwide have shown that depression is linked with an increased risk of various physical diseases.

Switzerland is ranked as one of the wealthiest countries in the world. It also has the most expensive and one of the top-rated health care systems in the world.

Prof. Gunther Meinlschmidt from the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Basel and the Faculty of Medicine at the Ruhr-University Bochum has led a research group. The team aimed at determining the link between depression and joint diseases. The analysis was based on the Swiss Health Survey, which involved 14,348 participants aged 15 years and beyond.

It was found that those with depressive symptoms had an increased risk of suffering from a physical disease. As a matter of fact, one-third of the subjects with depression also had at least one physical disease. According to researchers, the association was particularly evident with arthrosis and arthritis, which are inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the joints.

While more studies are needed to validate the link between depression and arthritis, the researchers suggest that a lack of physical activity may potentially result in depressive symptoms. Physical inactivity has long been linked with the development of joint diseases.

The cure for arthritis still hasn’t been found. This is why many sufferers resort to the use of various pain management options, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

While these medications may be useful, their use may be linked with side effects. The widespread scare related to these side effects has led many arthritis sufferers to turn to the use of glucosamine.
