Experts Highlight What Makes Women Susceptible to Osteoarthritis

(Newswire.net — June 26, 2017) Orlando, FL — Osteoarthritis is the most common arthritic condition in the United States alone. While it affects both genders, it appears that women are more prone to it.

Experts highlight the factors that make women more susceptible to osteoarthritis. These factors are hormones, genes, genetic predisposition, and obesity.

According to experts, women are by nature three times as susceptible to the condition due to the factors mentioned above. Statistics even show that the rates of osteoarthritis are higher in women than in men.

In the United States, about 27 million individuals suffer from osteoarthritis and 60 percent of these sufferers are women. Before the age of 55,  osteoarthritis tends to be more common in men.

However, after 55 years of age, it seems that the number of women sufferers surpasses the number of men.

Alexander Shikhman, M.D., PhD, founder of the Institute for Specialized Medicine in Del Mar, Calif., and medical director of Restorative Remedies, reveals that joints damaged by osteoarthritis also appear to vary by gender.

It has been found that arthritis in the hips more often affects men while women tend to have it in the hands or knees.

According to Yusuf Yazici, M.D., a rheumatologist at New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York, the bodies of women are designed to give birth.

Thus, the tendons in their lower body are more elastic compared to those in men. It is important to note that less stability in the joints increases the risk of injury.

Researchers suggest that the female hormones have an influence on the cartilage between the bones of the joints. This cartilage works by cushioning the bones to allow movement smoothly and painlessly.

In a laboratory study, experts had used the cells that form the cartilage and found that the female hormone estrogen has the potential to protect the cartilage from inflammation. Inflammation, on the other hand, has long been linked with the development of osteoarthritis.

Unfortunately, after menopause, the estrogen levels of women spiral down, and this triggers the loss of cartilage protection. This increases the risk of the condition even to those women who are on hormone-replacement therapy (HRT).

Studies are still underway to validate whether these factors truly increase the risk of osteoarthritis in women.

The good news is that women can resort to natural remedies, such as glucosamine. This natural alternative has long been thought to be one of the most powerful joint health enhancing supplements.

Glucosamine is believed to aid in the repair of a damaged cartilage as well as improve its overall health.
