Dr. Barr Interviewed on Breast Implant Controversy

(Newswire.net — March 20, 2018) West Palm Beach, FL — Dr. Fredric Barr, of Palm Beach Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, was recently interviewed on WPTV, West Palm Beach to talk about the controversial topic of breast implant safety.

The breast implant controversy arises from reports that some women are experiencing health issues which they attribute to their breast implants. Years after undergoing breast implant procedures, some women are reporting autoimmune disorders, hormonal imbalances and gastrointestinal problems, and are choosing to remove their implants.

In the March 5 interview, Dr. Barr reported he sees patients with breast implants coming into his office complaining of a range of symptoms such as aches and pains, headaches, fibromyalgia, thyroid imbalances, hormonal issues and more serious issues such as possible scleroderma, lupus and other autoimmune disorders.

Some of his patients have been to multiple health practitioners and have yet to be diagnosed.

“At this time, a patient comes in and tell me that they have been everywhere, they’ve seen doctors, they can’t come to a conclusion, they feel the implants are hurting them….I’ve got a solution….we need to get them out,” states Dr. Barr.

At this moment, Dr. Barr says there are no studies he’s aware of that definitively deem the FDA-approved breast implants to be unsafe. However, by no means does this imply that his sick patients don’t have valid concerns, “However, and this is the real however, I feel everybody heals differently, everybody is a different person, so therefore everyone reacts differently, we don’t know.”

Dr. Barr indicates that it is usually the older implants where he sees problems arise, such as capsular scar contractures (hardening around the breast) or when patients have mammograms showing the implant has ruptured. The only solution may be to undergo an implant explantation or En Bloc procedure. For women who chose to undergo these procedures, Dr. Barr reports some good results but cautions it is too early to know the long-term results.

Is Dr. Barr concerned that breast implants are now generally unsafe? Based on FDA recommendations, Dr. Barr still recommends patients go ahead with breast implants if they desire to have them. And for women who already have implants and are doing generally well, there is no cause to be panicked or afraid. Instead, Dr. Barr recommends a comprehensive re-evaluation every ten years. However, for patients who come to him and feel their implants are making them sick, Dr. Barr states, “Different story. We need to address that the way it is.”

Dr. Barr, a highly-respected surgeon in the plastic surgery field, believes in empowering women through education and support to help guide them in making the very personal decision about whether or not to remove their implants. In his opinion, it is imperative to educate women about their options and to encourage them to choose what they feel would be best for their own personal health.

Dr. Barr recently held a free seminar “Living in the Solution” on February 28, 2018, to discuss breast implant concerns and the solutions available for women. Due to immense interest in this topic, a second seminar is scheduled for Friday, March 23, 2018, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at the Spa at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens.
