1. Westminster Abbey, London

Over 1 million visitors each year visit Westminster Abbey, a 700-year old building where kings and queens have been married, coronated and buried for centuries. Audio tours are available in a number of different languages and the tour takes approximately one hour to complete. Full of grand Gothic architecture, Westminster Abbey houses some of the most famous people in history, including King Henry V, Geoffrey Chaucer, Isaac Newton, Charles Dickens and, more recently, Stephen Hawking.

2. London Eye, London

Located on the South Bank of the River Thames, the London Eye is a huge cantilevered observation wheel standing 443 ft tall. The 30-minute journey offers a stunning view across London from one of the 32 large-sized glass capsules. With more than 3.75 million visitors each year, it is recommended to pre-book your ride as the waiting lines can be quite long, especially around dusk, just in time to watch the sunset.

3. Buckingham Palace, London

Home to the Royal Family since Queen Victoria in the 1800s, Buckingham Palace is one of the UK’s most iconic buildings. The Changing of the Guard is a ceremony not to be missed, happening at 11.30am several times per week. During the summer months, parts of Buckingham Palace are open to the public. To check if the Queen is in residence, look to see if the flag is flying.

4. St Paul’s Cathedral, London

Dominating London’s skyline for more than 300 years, St. Paul’s Cathedral as it looks today was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and has held the funerals of names like Admiral Nelson, Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. It was also the location for Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s wedding. While the Church remains a working Church with regular services, tours are available and the walk up the stairs to view the top of the dome is something not to be missed.

5. Greenwich Observatory, London

Here you can see the Greenwich Meridian Line, from which the world’s time zones are set, standing with one foot east of the meridian line and one foot west of the meridian line. The observatory houses some amazing instruments from which astronomers over the centuries have made discoveries about our universe. Be sure to check out the Octagon room, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and dating back to 1675, along with the Great Equatorial Telescope. Greenwich Observatory sits atop Greenwich Park and offers some beautiful views of London across the River Thames.
