(Newswire.net — March 20, 2020) Orlando, FL — Obesity has long been associated with a variety of health disadvantages. It is also thought to place arthritis sufferers in an unsafe situation during surgical procedures. The good news is that recently, scientists have presented some new findings about this weight problem and joint procedure.

A study reveals obesity won’t jeopardize joint surgery safety. In a new analysis, researchers find that individuals who are obese or overweight who undergo joint replacement surgeries are less susceptible to needing blood transfusions.

More importantly, they are also no more likely to encounter complications than patients with normal weight.

According to Dr. Nolan Wessell, study co-author and an orthopaedic surgery resident at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. “And this finding is somewhat surprising, it is a very complex issue.

Dr. Wessell thought about the possibility of the link between larger individuals and having a larger total blood value. Thus, these people actually lose lower blood percentage during surgery than smalled individuals.

It could be that obese or overweight individuals have larger reserve and they can actually afford to lose more blood without even getting a transfusion. While this remains a theory, Dr. Wessell finds this concept makes sense.

However, Dr. Craig Silverton, senior study author and vice chairman of orthopaedics at Henry Ford, cautioned that the findings would be confirmed with more research.

According to statistics, over 79 million people in the United States suffer from obesity. It is important to remember that excess weight can significantly increase the risk for joint problems. Researchers even reveal that a huge percentage of individuals who have hip and knee surgery are either obese or overweight.

It is imperative that during surgery, blood loss in monitored regularly and the need for a blood transfusion should be eliminated, if possible. Transfusions have actually been linked with a higher risk for immune system problems, infection, prolonged hospitalization, and even death.

The good news is that a huge number of individuals who have hip and knee surgery typically don’t end up needing a transfusion.

Joint paint typically forces many sufferers to resort to surgery. Individuals with arthritis are the common sufferers of joint pain. There are arthritis sufferers who turn to the use of pain medications to achieve pain relief.

There are also those who resort to safer alternatives such as fish oil supplements. Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are believed to be effective in fighting arthritis pain and inflammation.

One of the many advantages in using fish oil supplements is that every capsule typically contains high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids (www.amazon.com/Omega-Fish-Oil-Supplement-Softgels/dp/B00O8NS20K/).
