(Newswire.net — April 9, 2020) —

As we venture more deeply into the 21st century, coding is on the verge (if not already there) of becoming a foundational skill for job seekers. Like reading, writing, and arithmetic, present and near future graduates will find it increasingly hard to land that primo gig unless they have at least some level of code skills.

One of the easiest ways to learn coding – go figure – is to find an online coding school, or code academy. Using online resources saves time, money, and enables you to learn at your own pace.

The good news for Florida residents is that the state has fostered a broad selection of resources available for those just starting out in the field or looking to improve their skills. Take a look at the following list and then – what are you waiting for? Write some code!

Bootcamps and Shorter-Term Training

This first group of coding resources is aimed at students who aren’t looking to get a four-year degree but, instead, just want to learn what they need to prepare them for the future and employment. No need for the bells, whistles, and additional costs involved with a bachelor’s degree when you can learn what you need to know to work as a programmer faster and with less expense.

Keep in mind that some of these suggestions are conducted on a part-time basis only and much of your work will be done at home. Before signing up and plunking down tuition, verify that you have suitable technology at home to handle the load of working with what is often resource-intensive software. Especially pay attention to your internet connection speed and processing power on your laptop or desktop computer.

1. Sylvan Learning Centers

This one focuses on the kids and offers programs especially geared towards smart, curious, creative youngsters with an interest in technology. Learning for elementary and middle school kids takes place through video game building. The cool thing is they  develop skills that ensure a lifetime of gainful employment and don’t even realize it because they’re having so much fun.

With learning centers located in dozens of locations around the state, there’s a good chance you’ll find one nearby.

2. Code Fever – Miami

Here’s another youth-focused coding program, this one specializing in low-income students in the Miami area. Sponsored by big names like Dell, BET, and the Knight Foundation, these 6-8 week sessions provide a solid grounding in not only a valuable selection of programming languages but on business skills as well, as many graduates discover an entrepreneurial bent they never realized they had. Code Fever typically occurs during the summer, so need to fear missing out on state-prescribed educational endeavors.

3. Gainesville Dev Academy – Gainseville

Let’s dive into the adult side of things and take a look at opportunities for those who are already working, perhaps underemployed or at a job they detest, to re-focus their energies to gain real world skills in one of the hottest sectors going. Depending upon your interest, expect a full course to last anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks and cost $2,500 to $7,000. The good news for graduates is that the academy is plugged into the local employer scene and can help find employment after graduation. Classes specialize in web development, programming, and iOS development.

4. 4Geeks Academy – Miami

This coding course allows students to focus on either front end or full stack development. Learning takes place in-person at the Miami campus and will set you back about $9,600. Organized as a part-time training course, 4Geeks Academy was created with the idea that a student would be able to complete training without having to quit their job, though you should expect to need to devote around 25 hours weekly to learning. Included in the training are modules on networking and creating a resume’ intended to result in real world programming jobs.

5. American Graphics Institute – Orlando

For those looking to take a smaller bite of coding training, American Graphics Institute, located in Orlando offers 1-5 day courses that run between $500 and $1,000. Offerings run the gamut of introductory material to advanced skills, some of which are HTML5, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop. Training is for students looking to gain skills in designing interfaces with an interest in UX/UI. Classes are held in person and available on both a full-time and part-time basis.

If You’re Looking for a Degree

There are too many colleges and universities in Florida to provide an exhaustive list. Plus, someone else has already done all the hard work in that area. A couple of things to pay attention to is cost (of course) because there is a huge difference between public institutions and the various private options. Another important educational metric is the student to teacher ratio. Obviously, the fewer students that any one teacher is responsible for educating, the more personal attention you can expect to receive.

You should also decide what kind of degree you’re interested in obtaining. Options range from two-year Associate’s programs, through a traditional four-year Bachelor’s Degree, and on up to Master’s or Doctoral work – the last two if you’re highly motivated.

A few programs to get your search started:

  • Daytona State College

  • Northwest Florida State College

  • Miami Dade College

  • Full Sail University

  • Florida Keys Community College

  • Fort Myers Technical College

Final Thoughts

We’ve arrived at a moment in history where the internet exists as the primary global utility. Those who have the particular skill set to create, develop, and maintain the online sites and services that the rest of us use are valuable members of society indeed.

If ever there was a chance in your life to make a big decision for the better, this is it. Coding as a skill and employment option still sits on the edge of bursting into the public consciousness to the level we suspect a few more years will bring. For Florida residents, be glad you live in a state where resources are plentiful and exist at a variety of price points for those who want to follow that career path.
