(Newswire.net — June 30, 2020) Orlando, FL — In the United States, research has found that age-elated macular degeneration affects 2.1 percent of the population. It is worth realizing that this indicated 2 million older Americans are affected by it.

According to medical experts, it has not been identified yet what causes the condition. However, it is worth realizing that some risk factors are found to increase its likelihood.

Health authorities warn against risk factors like age and smoking. The number one risk factor is age as it accounts for one-third of adults over 75 years old affected by the condition.

Experts similarly warn against smoking, which produces oxidative damage. It is important to remember that oxidative damage contributes to the onset and progression of the condition.

Other risk factors are prolonged sun exposure, diet, obesity, hypertension, eye color, living a sedentary lifestyle, and heredity.

The good news is that there are ways to ward off the condition, and these particularly include maintaining a healthy weight. It is also strongly recommended to have a nutritious diet, and this means consuming more green leafy vegetables.

Quitting bad habits like smoking is one of the keys to fighting the condition.

There are therapeutic nutrients like vitamin B12 found to be potentially helpful against macular degeneration. This healing ingredient has long been gaining increasing popularity in the global market.

According to scientists, it is strongly recommended to maintain adequate levels of vitamin B12. This has been found to aid in preventing the development of age-related macular degeneration.

Studies have shown that vitamin B12 supplementation may reduce the levels of homocysteine. This pertains to a type of amino acid that is found in your bloodstream. It is important to be warned that elevated levels of homocysteine have been linked with an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration.

Researchers carried out a study and it involved 5,000 women aged 40 or older.

In this study, the subjects were treated with vitamin B12 supplements as well as vitamin B6 and folic acid for seven years. It has been found they had fewer cases of macular degeneration than the placebo group.

More particularly, their risk for the development of any form of the condition decreased by 34 percent. The risk for more severe types also lowered by 41 percent.
