(Newswire.net — April 21, 2021) Orlando, FL — There are many mental health issues nowadays that affect more and more people. Many studies suggest making dietary and lifestyle practices, but in a new study it appears some leisure activities may be useful.

This study was published in Social Science & Medicine.

In this research carried out by the scientists from University of Georgia, it has been found that the game of mahjong may be helpful in boosting mental health.

This game is popular among and played by older Chinese people. More particularly, the investigators suggest that playing this popular tile-based strategy game regularly was one of several types of social participation associated with the decreased rates of depression among middle-aged and older adults in China.

According to Adam Chen, global economic and epidemiologic trends have led to significant increases in the burden of mental health among older adults, especially in the low and middle-income countries.

Chen is an associate professor of health policy and management at UGA’s College of Public Health and study co-author.

Chen and collaborators from China’s Huazhong University of Science and Technology looked into survey data from nearly 11,000 residents aged 45 years and older from the nationally representative China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.

In China, poor mental health is considered to be a major issue. On a global scale, it accounts for 17 percent of the disease burden of mental disorders.

The investigators stressed that urban residents who played mahjong were at a reduced likelihood to feel depressed.

There is an increasing number of research studies today that reveal the various aspects of mental health. More particularly, there are studies that highlight the remedies potentially helpful in battling with mental health issues.

It is worth remembering that many mental health issues today are found to be preventable. They may be prevented through the use of plant-based ingredients that contain brain health enhancing agents.

Scientists suggest remedies like curcumin may be beneficial for mental health. This natural ingredient is loaded with a variety of pharmacological agents that could offer protection and improvements to brain health.

In some studies, it has been found to have adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, antiviral, renoprotective, neurorestorative, and metal-chelating properties.

It also contains anti-platelet, antioxidant, anti-cytotoxic, antibiotic, antimicrobial, anti-purulent, and anticatabolic agents.

These are therapeutic properties being widely studied by researchers due to their remarkable healing potentials to the brain. In addition to its mental health potentials, curcumin is also being widely studied due to its other healing benefits.
