Study Shows Social Distancing Increases Loneliness in Older Adults

In this research, it has actually been found that social distancing has increased the feelings of loneliness in the older population in Scotland. Further, this response to Covid-19 impacts the well-being of the elderly. 

This study has actually identified an association between increases in loneliness among individuals over 60 years old and the worsening of wellbeing and health. 

These findings came from a research study launched under the Scottish Government’s Chief Scientist Office Rapid Research in the COVID-19 program in May. 

It was spearheaded by professor Anna Whittaker, of the University’s Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport.

“Our study, which involved a survey of more than 1,400 older people, examined the impact of social distancing during the pandemic on social activity, loneliness, and wellbeing. The majority of survey participants reported that social distancing has made them experience more loneliness, social contact with fewer people, and less social contact overall,” said Professor Whittaker. 

The researchers found that having a larger social network as well as better perceived social support appears to offer protection against loneliness and poorer health due to social distancing. 

In this research, of the 1,429 survey participants, 84 percent were aged 60 or over. Further, they had an average social network of five people. 

The subjects, on average, socialized five days a week for over 6.6 hours every week. It is also worth noting that fifty-six percent reported that social distancing regulations led them to loneliness.
