Research Found a Link Between Mediterranean-Style Diet and Better Thinking Skills

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh carried out a study.

Experts say that there are markers of healthy brain aging, and they include greater grey or white matter volume, or fewer white matter lesions. They found no difference in these markers between those regularly eating a Mediterranean diet and those who did not.

The subjects completed tests of thinking speed, problem-solving, memory, and word knowledge. They also answered a questionnaire about their eating habits in the previous year. This study involved magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans in over 350 individuals.

The scan was for the purpose of gaining insights into the brain structure of the participants. The investigators utilized statistical models in finding links between a person’s diet and their thinking skills and brain health in later life.

The general findings reveal that those who most closely adhered to a Mediterranean diet had the highest cognitive function scores. The results remained true even when childhood IQ, smoking, physical activity, and health factors were taken into account.
