Scientists Highlight Hope in Getting One Step Ahead Against Antibiotic Resistance

(Newswire.net — May 5, 2022) Orlando, FL — Over the years, researchers have been warning against the dangerous impacts of antibiotic resistance. It is worth noting this problem continues to claim more and more lives.

A group of researchers in Denmark is attempting to get one step ahead in the fight against antibiotic resistance. They revealed that a cocktail of common antibiotics may have the potential to combat E.coli.

A number of disease-causing bacteria have acquired resistance genes, which render antibiotic treatment ineffective. This is especially true for a certain gene called CTX-M-15, encoding an extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) that can result in resistance in E. coli triggering urinary tract infections.

The research team at DTU has revealed that a cocktail of two common antibiotics namely mecillinam and cefotaxime, can trigger these specific multi-resistant E. coli (extended-spectrum beta-lactamase, ESBL) to be sensitive to treatment again.

It is worth noting that such a development of resistance towards either mecillinam or cefotaxime results in concurrent sensitivity to the other drug, and it pertains to a phenomenon called collateral sensitivity.

The study has been published in Nature Communications.

Experts say that the CTX-M-15 gene is widely distributed on a global scale and limits doctors’ ability to effectively treat urinary tract infections.

“We need to take precautionary measures to avoid resistance because it is very likely that this mutation will occur at some point. By giving both mecillinam and cefotaxime at the same time, the CTX-M-15 mutation works like a switch, and the bacteria become sensitive to treatment again,” says first-author Carola Rosenkilde.

Rosenkilde is a PhD-student at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

The World Health Organization warns that there is an estimated 50 percent of women report having urinary tract infections at some point in their lifetime.

In battling UTIs in a natural way, it may be helpful to use side-effect-free remedies like D-mannose. This healing ingredient is a popular subject of research due to its remarkable ability to get rid of E.coli, which is responsible for 90 percent of all UTI cases.

More and more consumers turn to the use of highly potent and pure supplements like Divine Bounty D-mannose.
