New Research Reveals 6,000 Steps a Day Lessen Knee Oa Limitations

A new study has shown that taking 6,000 steps every day may help keep the physical limitations caused by arthritis at bay.  

This research was funded in part by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and published in the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) journal, Arthritis Care & Research. 

It suggests that walking 6,000 steps or more every day may help offer protection to those with knee osteoarthritis or at risk of it experiencing mobility issues. These include climbing the stairs or getting up from a chair.  

In a study by Lawrence et al. (Arthritis Rheum, 2008), it’s been found that almost 27 million people age 25 and older in the United States are diagnosed with osteoarthritis.  

Previous research has shown that knee osteoarthritis is the top cause of functional limitation among older individuals. The conditions make climbing stairs and walking difficult.  

Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) reveal that 80 percent of OA patients have some limitation in movement. Further, 11 percent of adults suffering from knee OA were found to be needing assistance with personal care assistance. 

“Our study examines if more walking equates with better functioning, and if so, how much daily walking is needed to minimize the risk of developing problems with mobility in people with knee OA,” said Daniel White, PT, ScD, from Sargent College at Boston University in Massachusetts.

It is also worth noting that walking an additional 1,000 steps each was linked with between a 16 percent to 18 percent decrease in incident functional limitation two years later.
