A Mediterranean Diet May Help Combat the Negative Health Impacts of Obesity

A study was carried out and published in PLOS Medicine. 

It was performed by Karl Michaëlsson of Uppsala University, Sweden, and colleagues.

This new study looked into the BMI, diet, and mortality of 79,003 Swedish adults enrolled in the Swedish Mammography Cohort and Cohort of Swedish Men.

In this research, it has been found that a healthy quality Mediterranean-like diet partially modifies the link between obesity and cardiovascular mortality.

In 2015, it has been found that higher body mass (BMI) accounted for 4.0 million deaths globally. Further, over two-thirds of these deaths were caused by cardiovascular disease (CVD). 

Previous studies have recommended that factors like healthy dietary patterns may combat the increased odds of CVD linked with higher BMI. 

The investigators assessed the adherence to a Mediterranean-like diet (BMD) on a scale of 0 to 8. They also integrated information on the consumption of fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts, unrefined or high-fiber grains, fish, red and processed meat, and olive oil. 

Due to the findings, the researchers suggest that sticking to this healthy eating pattern may be an excellent focus in taking measures to avoid obesity, for the purpose of preventing overall mortality.
