A Study Highlights Link Between Migraines and High Sodium Levels

(Newswire.net — July 8, 2022) Orlando, FL — More and more researchers are carrying out studies to investigate headaches like migraine. It is quite common and there are studies linking it with some risk factors.

According to experts, it affects around 18 percent of women and 6 percent of men. It is a type of headache that is characterized by severe pain in the head. It is one of the most common headache disorders that sometimes lead to nausea and vomiting.

A study was carried out and presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

In this research, it has been found that those with migraines had significantly higher sodium concentrations in their cerebrospinal fluid compared to people without the condition.

This research used a technique called sodium MRI to look at migraine patients.

It is worth noting migraines may also occur with vision changes or odd sensations in the body known as auras. Today, there are many people suffering from migraines who are left undiagnosed and untreated.

In contrast, other patients were treated with pharmaceutical drugs for migraines despite suffering from a different type of headache, such as the more common tension variety.

“It would be helpful to have a diagnostic tool supporting or even diagnosing migraine and differentiating migraine from all other types of headaches,” said study author Melissa Meyer, M.D.,

Meyer is a radiology resident at the Institute of Clinical Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, University Hospital Mannheim and Heidelberg University in Heidelberg, Germany.

In this research, Dr. Meyer and colleagues looked into the magnetic resonance technique called cerebral sodium MRI to understand migraines better. It is worth noting that almost always, MRI depends on the protons in generating an image but sodium can also be visualized.

Research has revealed that sodium plays a significant role in brain chemistry.

“As this was an exploratory study, we plan to examine more patients, preferably during or shortly after a migraine attack, for further validation,” Dr. Meyer said.

There are various factors found to contribute to the development of migraines. Experts have also long been increasingly studying the remedies potentially helpful in providing relief to sufferers.

Interestingly, there are nutrients like B vitamins found to be particularly beneficial. In some studies, intake of the B vitamin called riboflavin worked wonders in offering relief to sufferers.

Today, formulas like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex are being widely reported to by consumers.

It contains Choline, Pantothenic acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Niacin, Riboflavin, Thiamin, and vitamin B6 (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B07414752B).
