Tai Chi Now Found To Offer Benefits Similar to Exercise

A study was carried out by investigators at the University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and UCLA.

In this research, it has been found that tai chi mirrors the benefits of conventional exercise by lessening waist circumference. The researchers of this study had middle-aged and older adults with central obesity.

The researchers randomly assigned 543 participants in a 1:1:1 ratio to a control group with no exercise intervention (n= 181), conventional exercise consisting of aerobic exercise and strength training (EX group) (n= 181), and a tai chi group (TC group) (n= 181). Interventions lasted 12 weeks.

Waist circumference was the primary outcome and the secondary outcomes were high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride, body weight; body mass index; and fasting plasma glucose levels.

The results have led researchers to suggest that tai chi could be an effective approach to managing central obesity.
