Research Highlights Link Between Bone Strength and Gut Microbiota

(Newswire.net — September 12, 2022) Orlando, FL — An increasing number of studies continue to highlight some techniques in protecting and strengthening the bones. However, it remains true that more and more people are still struggling with bone health issues.

A study was carried out and published in Cell Metabolism.

In this research, it has been found that exposure to warmer ambient temperatures (34 °C) increases bone strength. At the same time, it also has the effect of preventing the loss of bone density typical of osteoporosis.

This bone disease called osteoporosis is associated with aging. It is characterized by bone deterioration, bone density loss, and the increased risk of fractures. It is a major public health issue affecting one-third of postmenopausal women.

A research team from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), in Switzerland, carried out epidemiological analyses, laboratory experiments, and state-of-the-art metagenomic and metabolomics tools.

They were able to see that the link between ambient temperature and bone strength might have something to do with the change in the composition of gut microbiota, which is triggered by heat.

The investigators suggest it could be replicated by transplanting the microbiota of mice dwelling in a warm environment to mice with osteoporosis. After the transplant, it has been found that the bones became denser and stronger.

The investigators looked into the global epidemiological data regarding the incidence of osteoporosis in correlation with the average temperature, calcium consumption, latitude, and vitamin D levels.

They found that the higher the temperature, the fewer hip fractures regardless of other factors. It is worth realizing that hip fractures are one of the main consequences of osteoporosis.

“We found a clear correlation between geographical latitude and hip fractures, meaning that in the northern countries the incidence is higher compared to the warmer south,” says Mirko Trajkovski.

“Normalising the analysis of the known players such as vitamin D or calcium did not modify this correlation. However, when we excluded the temperature as the determinant, the correlation was lost. This is not to say that calcium or vitamin D does not play a role, either alone or in combination. However, the determining factor is heat -or lack thereof,” Trajkovski adds.

Maintaining gut health is undeniably vital for various aspects of well-being. It is even associated with immune system health and strength. This is why it is vital to ensure it is in shape.

It is worth noting that there are many ways to maintain gut health, and one is through the use of formulas like Divine Bounty Digestive Enzymes.
