Social Activeness Reduces Dementia Risk Among 60 Year-Olds

In this study, it has been found that increased social activeness among individuals in their 50s and 60s predicts a reduced risk of dementia development later on.

The research team utilized data from the Whitehall II study and tracked 10,228 participants. In between 1985 and 2013, the subjects were asked on six occasions about the frequency of social contact with friends and relatives. 

They were also made to complete cognitive texting from 1997 onwards.  The investigators looked into the electronic health records of the subjects up until 2017 to see if they were ever diagnosed with dementia. 

“Here we’ve found that social contact, in middle age and late life, appears to lower the risk of dementia. This finding could feed into strategies to reduce everyone’s risk of developing dementia, adding yet another reason to promote connected communities and find ways to reduce isolation and loneliness,” Sommerlad added. 

It is worth noting the researchers found that at age 60, increased social contact is linked with a significantly reduced risk of developing dementia later in life. The analysis has further shown that seeing friends nearly on a daily basis at age 60 led to a reduced likelihood of developing dementia by12 a percent.
