(Newswire.net — December 5, 2022) Ste 177 Winnetka, IL, IL — Health care providers and mental health experts have long been warning against the risk factors of depression, which is an increasingly common mental health issue.

Long hours of work and high job demands now found to increase the risk of depression. According to researchers, employees who work for long hours and have high job demands are more susceptible to developing depression.

The findings of this research were published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, official publication of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM).

“Interventions targeting the combination of “long hours/overworked” (LHO) might help to reduce the risk of depression in the workplace,” according to the report by Drs. Takahashi Amagasa and Takeo Nakayama of Kyoto University School of Public Health.

In this study, the investigators looked into job and workplace factors impacting depression risk in a group of 218 Japanese clerical workers.

It’s been found that employees who work at least 60 hours per week and usually have had too much work were at a heightened odds of depression. Those who initially had the LHO combination more likely to have depression by 15 times when re-evaluated one to three years later.

Previous research has shown mixed results with regard to the mental and physical health impacts of long work hours.

“By targeting LHO, especially changes in LHO status, mental health measures that effectively reduce the occurrence of major depressive disorder will become possible by controlling factors in the occupational environment,” concluded Drs Amagasa and Nakayama.

Scientists are increasingly studying on the various aspects of depression and how it can be remedied. It is worth noting that this mental health issue lessens overall quality of life and health of sufferers.
