A Study Shows Sleep Restriction May Amplify Anger

A study has shown that sleep restriction has the ability to amplify anger. This research program involved an analysis of diaries and lab experiments.  

The investigators looked into daily diary entries from 202 college students, who tracked their sleep, daily stressors, and anger over one month. 

Preliminary results reveal that there were those who reported experiencing more anger on days following less sleep than usual for them. 

The investigating team also carried out a lab experiment that involved 147 community residents. The subjects were assigned randomly either to maintain their regular sleep schedule or to restrict their sleep at home by around five hours across two nights. 

After this manipulation, the researchers evaluated anger during exposure to irritating noise.

It has been found that individuals who were well-slept adapted to noise and also reported less anger after two days. In contrast, those who were sleep-restricted exhibited higher and increased anger towards aversive noise.  

This has led the investigators to suggest that sleep loss undermined emotional adaptation to frustrating circumstances. It is important to note that subjective sleepiness accounted for a majority of the experimental impact of sleep loss on anger. 

“The results are important because they provide strong causal evidence that sleep restriction increases anger and increases frustration over time,” said Zlatan Krizan, who has a doctorate in personality and social psychology and is a professor of psychology at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. 

“Moreover, the results from the daily diary study suggest such effects translate to everyday life, as young adults reported more anger in the afternoon on days they slept less.”
