Prolonged Sleep Disturbance May Negatively Affect the Bones

(Newswire.net — December 23, 2022) Orlando, FL — Various research studies were carried out in the past to look into the various aspects of bone health. Some researchers have found that sleep could influence the protection and health of the bones.

A study has shown that inadequate sleep is associated with chronic disease risk. This common health issue might even be an unrecognized risk factor for bone loss.

The findings of this research were published in the Endocrine Society’s 99th annual meeting in Orlando, Fla.

In this study, the investigators have particularly found that healthy men actually had decreased levels of a marker of bone formation in their blood following three weeks of cumulative sleep restriction and circadian disruption.

It was the same that was observed in jet lag or shift work. Further, there were no changes in a biological marker of bone resorption or breakdown.

“This altered bone balance creates a potential bone loss window that could lead to osteoporosis and bone fractures,” lead investigator Christine Swanson, M.D.

Swanson is an assistant professor at the University of Colorado in Aurora, Colo., said. Swanson completed the research while she was a fellow at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Ore., with Drs. Eric S. Orwoll and Steven A. Shea.

“If chronic sleep disturbance is identified as a new risk factor for osteoporosis, it could help explain why there is no clear cause for osteoporosis in the approximately 50 percent of the estimated 54 million Americans with low bone mass or osteoporosis,” Swanson said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in the United States, inadequate sleep has been found to affect over 25 percent of the population occasionally and 10 percent frequently.

It is important to take measures helpful in enhancing sleep, and one is to ensure proper nutrition. There are nutrients like B vitamins found to be particularly useful in getting a good slumber.

Over the years, researchers have been investigating the therapeutic benefits of B vitamins, which have been found to help combat a myriad of diseases. Some studies have shown intake of B vitamins helped enhance sleep quality and quantity.

Today, there are many health-conscious consumers who turn to the use of formulas like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex. This amazing supplement has Choline, Pantothenic acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Niacin, Riboflavin, Thiamin, and vitamin B6.
