“The ‘dead internet theory’ is the idea that most of the internet we interact with today is no longer organic or fueled by humans,” explains Jared Navarre, founder of Keyni Consulting and CEO of Onnix. “Instead, it’s dominated by bots full of recycled content, and a large portion of engagement is automated.”

“One of the scariest active loops right now is in data validation,” Navarre says. “If AI is generating content, personas, and narratives, and AI search engines and assistants are ‘fact-checking’ or verifying ideas against that same content, then we’ve created a terrifying closed loop. All it takes is a single agent in the middle to instantly generate the necessary content for false validation, and suddenly falsehoods become ‘validated’ truths. It’s like letting a photocopier grade its own copies. In that system, misinformation doesn’t just spread — it could manufacture its own proof on demand.”
Businesses must implement new technology in ways that bolster trust
As companies adopt new technology solutions, the impact those solutions could have on trust — both internally and externally — should be a key consideration. For example, data on consumer engagement becomes untrustworthy as the balance in online activity shifts from human to AI. A thousand comments won’t mean much if 800 of them were written by a language model in a server room.

If we don’t, the ‘dead internet’ becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

Today’s AI tools have promised to deliver operational efficiency and a competitive edge, which has made businesses quick to embrace technology changes. But the specter of the dead internet stands as a warning that short-term business growth won’t necessarily translate to long-term success. Careful integration is needed to ensure positive business outcomes. In this new landscape, authenticity becomes a feature, not a default.
Successful business tech implementation will depend on designing systems that expect AI involvement, not ones that assume human purity.
“AI hasn’t killed the internet, but it has supercharged the core concern and possibility of the theory,” Navarre warns. “We’re seeing an explosion of AI-generated articles, comments, reviews, and even social media personas. When human and machine-made content mix without clear labeling, it gets harder to know what’s authentic. The paradox is that AI both adds value and erodes trust, creating an internet that feels dead, not because there’s no life, but because it’s harder to tell what’s real. In the end, the internet won’t die from too much AI; it will die from not knowing who to trust.”
