Ways to Know It Is Time to Swap Your Mattress for a New One

(Newswire.net — September 7, 2017) — When most people invest in a new mattress they assume that it’ll last forever. However, this isn’t the case. While mattresses are designed to have a lifespan of between seven and ten years, there will come a day when you’ll need a replacement.

But when is the right time? And how will you know that your current mattress isn’t up to par?

How Often Should I Change My Mattress?

It depends… some mattresses last longer than others; it’s all down to how much use the mattress gets, and whether or not it still offers adequate support. After all, an old and worn out mattress won’t be very effective at tackling back pain or improving posture, nor will it be very comfortable!

Listen to your body. As you grow older you’ll know better than anyone else whether or not the mattress needs to be replaced. Do you wake up with back pain? Or find yourself frequently tossing and turning during the night? Perhaps you can never find that optimum position or constantly have a spring digging into your spine?

If your body doesn’t give you the answer, look out for the following:

  • Whether or not the mattress is showing signs of wear and tear. This could include dips where dips shouldn’t be, lumps, rips and discoloration.

  • Whether the mattress is uncomfortable to use. Older mattresses tend to lose their comfort and “springiness,” which can result in lack of sleep.

  • Whether the mattress attracts bed bugs, dirt, germs and mites. While new mattresses tend to avoid those microscopic little pests, older mattresses can attract them.

  • Whether the mattress is nearing the 10 year mark. There is no set length of time a mattress can last for; however, seven to ten years is a good rule of thumb to follow.

  • Whether or not the mattress offers the support you need. If you’re someone who suffers with back and neck pain, you’ll likely notice if your mattress is providing the right amount of support in the area where you need it. Again, this can lead to pain, discomfort and further problems.
