(Newswire.net — October 20, 2017) –According to a New York-based public relations and communications company, Barson-Marsteller, based on data from their list of world leaders, US President Donald Trump has garnered just over 39.7 million Twitter followers.

This number makes him the most followed world leader on Twitter, who has more followers than the head of the Catholic Church – Pope Francis with his audience of 39.5 million followers on the same social media site.

Now, Trump is at the top of the list of some 890 Twitter accounts from world leaders such as heads of states and governments from all over the world.

But, the head of digital service at the Barson-Masteller branch, EMEA, Matthias Lifkens, who founded the Twiplomacy website that publishes data on digital diplomatic initiatives, said that many of Trump followers on the popular social network are fake. Those fake accounts are mostly either dormant or bots.

The second most followed world leader on Twitter is India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with 34.9 million followers for @narendramodi. Also, he has an additional 21.3 million followers on the @PMOIndia prime minister’s office account.

Former President Barack Obama’s Twitter feed, @barackobama, still has more followers than Donald Trump’s – 95.6 million, but he is not the president anymore and that’s why he isn’t considered for the list.

Also, Obama’s reaction to the Charlottesville violence last August, has taken the title of the most liked tweet in Twitter history. The tweet in question, which is actually a quote from Nelson Mandela’s 1994 autobiography “Long Walk to Freedom”, scored 3.44 million likes.

Among the list of many famous people whose Twitter accounts have the highest number of followers are singers Katy Perry and Justin Bieber – each account has more than 100 million followers.

Donald Trump is very active on the Twitterverse, and it sometimes seems that Twitter is his favorite method of communication with the world and his fellow Americans. The US President often publishes government policy or presents his views on his personal Twitter account @realDonaldTrump and maybe that’s why he has such a large number of followers.
