(Newswire.net— June 29, 2018) — One third of Americans believe that a second civil war could happen in the next five years according to a new poll by Rasmussen national telephone and online survey.
According to the poll, thirty-one percent (31%) of US voters say it’s likely that the United States will experience a second civil war sometime in the next five years, with 11% who say it’s very likely.
When questioned “how likely is it that the United States will experience a second civil war sometime in the next five years?” US citizens answered that they are feeling safe. Most Americans are convinced a next civil war is unlikely to happen and the Democrats (37%) are more fearful than Republicans (32%). Only 29% are not concerned at all, the results show.
Congressman Steve King, however, warned that America is heading towards a second civil war. “America is heading in the direction of another Harpers Ferry,” King tweeted adding that “after that comes Ft. Sumter,” USA Today reports.
King’s tweet comes as a reflection on a report about protesters occupying an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Portland, Oregon. He drew a parallel to the historic town in West Virginia, Harper’s Ferry, where militant abolitionist John Brown led a raid against a federal armory in October 1859. The intention was to spark a slave uprising but the attempt failed after U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert E. Lee intervened with his troops. John Brown was hanged for treason, but the event itself was a failed attempt to spark a slave uprising.
The actual event that marked the start of the US civil war was the siege of Fort Sumter in the Harbor of Charleston, when South Carolina proclaimed succession after President Lincoln was elected and Republicans seized power over the country.
According to another Rasmussen report, 42 percent of Americans believe the US is on the right course, but 59% of all voters are concerned that those opposed to President Trump’s policies will resort to violence, 33% of them are very concerned.
While Americans are ambiguous on the likelihood of a second civil war, there are those who believe that the war has already begun. According to USA Today columnist, Tennessee Law Professor Glenn Harlan Reynolds, a new civil war is “well underway,” while Bloomberg columnist Thomas Schaller declared that America was “at the beginning of a soft civil war.”
The louder voices among those who advocate the necessity to rebel Trump’s rule belong to American actors, musicians and activists, as Russia Today reports, citing provocative statements about the rise of “fascism” and the need for “revolution.”
