(Newswire.net— June 27, 2020) — While national governments around the world are slowly easing measures against the coronavirus pandemic, the World Health Organization has reported an abrupt increase in the number of those infected in Europe.
However, the most difficult situation is currently in Brazil and the United States, where as many as 40,000 newly infected people were recorded on Thursday, and that is just the tip of the iceberg, experts warn, BBC News reports.
Europe, after easing the restrictive measures, is recording an increase in the number of infected, for the first time in the last few months. According to the WHO, there are about 20,000 new cases and 700 deaths every day.
“For weeks, I have spoken about the risk of a resurgence as countries adjust measures,” Dr. Kluge said at a virtual news conference on Thursday.
In 11 countries, including Armenia, Sweden, Moldova and Northern Macedonia, the accelerated transmission of the virus has led to a very significant increase in the number of those infected. In as many as 30 European countries, there has been an increase in the total number of infected people in the last two weeks.
“In 11 of these countries, the accelerated transmission has led to the very significant resurgence that if left unchecked will push health systems to the brink once again,” Dr. Kluge said.
Until then, apart from certain drugs, the strongest weapon of humanity will be caution and restraint- and it seems that there is less and less of both.
In the United States, most of the measures were transferred to the jurisdiction of local communities, and federal states lifted the restrictions two months ago.
“We started opening in early May. In my opinion, it’s too early and too fast,” said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who sees the result as catastrophic.
Unfortunately, there are no signs of slowing down, and the number of infected people is increasing, warns Dr. Peter Jay Hotey, the dean from the Department of Infectious Medicine, Baylor Medical College.
On Thursday, 40,000 new cases were officially confirmed, the most recorded in one day since the beginning of the epidemic.
The President of the United States insists that the high number is a result of intense testing. “If we don’t test, we won’t have any cases,” Donald Trump explained.
Discussing whether what is happening is the second wave or the second peak of the first wave – is not helpful. In both the United States and Europe, politicians are choosing between two evils: shutting down the economy or risking further infection.
