(Newswire.net — March 1, 2016) Huntington Beach, California — Nicolas Echavarria was instrumental in helping his University of Arkansas Razorbacks golf team secure a win at the All-American Intercollegiate Championship, held at the Golf Club of Houston on February 19-21, 2016.  The team rallied from behind to clinch the title, helped by Nicolas’s performance of a one-under 35 on the back nine of the course, including two birdies.  That achievement made him one of only seven players to shoot under par on the course’s par three holes. After beginning the day in 16th place, he found his footing and worked his way through the competitors, finishing off with his first top 10 finish of the year and his fifth career top 10.  The team itself finished with a nine-under 279 at the end of competition, which was enough to overcome the lead set by host school Houston.

“Our whole team rose to the occasion,” says Nicolas.  “We started off a bit shaky – at one point we were down by 22 strokes — but used our momentum to take the lead.”  The Championship title was Coach Brad McMakin’s 21st tournament victory since taking over as head coach of the Razorbacks team.

Nicolas Echavarria has been hailed as one of golf’s most promising young stars.  In his home country of Colombia, he was a member of the Colombian National Team in 2012 and was ranked number six in his class by Golfweek.  After finishing high school, Nicolas entered school at the University of Arkansas and began to shine in tournaments with the Razorbacks team.  He has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll twice in his collegiate career, once in 2013 and the next the following year.  That same year, he won the Mexican Amateur golf title.  One of his many achievements at the school includes his performance at the SEC Golf Championship, where he holds the distinction of tying as 3rd best 54-hole scorer in the program’s history. His teammates and coaches regard him as one of the most dedicated the team has ever fielded, and his work ethic stands out among his teammates.

Earlier in the 2015-2016 season, Nic represented Colombia and his collegiate team in the Latin American Amateur Championship (LAAC), where he placed 12th after three days of intense competition. After round three of the tournament, Nic lead the whole thing, nearly breaking a record for a single round.
