- Look for the option Buy new domain.
- Type the domain name you are looking for. (Type your store name in any combination of keywords).
- You will see the list of domain names available for your store name, select the domain name of your choice, you will see the price displayed. Click on buy.
- You can use your credit card or PayPal account to buy the domain.
- Once you complete the transaction, you will see it listed on the screen.
- Save this domain and you are done.
Adding External Domain
If you have bought a domain from some other registrar, you can add this domain to Shopify. This is how you can do it:
- Login to the Shopify website. Select Sales channels –> Online Store –> Domains.
- Select the option to connect to the existing domain.
- Type the domain name that you purchase from another registrar in the space provided.
- Once you do this, you need to login to the domain registrar’s dashboard and change the DNS setting. You need to change the A record to 23.227.38.32, which is Shopify’s IP address.
- You then need to change the CNAME to shops.myshopify.com. It can take 2 to 4 days for these changes to be affected.
- You will get a notification once this is done.
Changing Shopify Domain
By default, Shopify has a domain in the format of mystorename.myshopify.com. You can change this to your new domain, whether you have taken it from Shopify or from any other domain registrar. This is how you can do it:
- Login to the Shopify website. Select Sales channels –> Online Store –> Domains.
- Select the option to change primary domain.
- You will see the domains that you added and now you can select the domain registered.
- Select and click on save and that’s it! Your new domain is added.
Using The App
All that was explained above was to make settings change through the Shopify website. All this can even be done using the Shopify app that is available on iOS or Android. You can download the Shopify app and install it. Login to your Shopify account and you can use the app for managing the domain.
Look for the Store icon and click on it. Then select Sales channel –> Online store –>Domains. You will find all the options here.
To buy a new domain select the buy domain and type the name of the domain you are looking for. Choose the domain and tap on the buy option. You can now pay by credit card or PayPal. You will see the new domain listed. Choose Change domain and select the new domain and tap on Save. Your new domain is now ready.
In case you have bought a domain from another registrar, choose Connect existing domain and then type the name of the new domain and tap next. Change the DNS settings of your domain as described above and your store is now ready to go live.
