The investigators looked into the link between 19 blood and urine biomarkers and diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, liver, bone and joint health, and kidney function.
The researchers accounted for some potentially influential factors like education, sex, age, ethnicity, obesity, smoking, and alcohol intake. However, it has remained true that compared to meat-eaters, vegetarians had significantly reduced levels of 13 biomarkers.
These include total cholesterol; low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, apolipoprotein A, apolipoprotein B, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and alanine aminotransferase (AST), insulin-like growth factor, and creatinine.
Vegetarians have further been found to have reduced levels of beneficial biomarkers that include high-density lipoprotein ‘good’ (HDL) cholesterol, and vitamin D and calcium (linked to bone and joint health).
