(Newswire.net — March 5, 2019) Orlando, FL — Today, more and more people are diagnosed with depression. This brain disorder is serious, and it needs to be properly addressed.
Scientists at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy conducted a study.
In this research, it was found that depression is on the rise in the United States. This study was published in the Psychological Medicine journal.
Within 2005 to 2015, depression rates increased significantly among those 12 years old and above. This increase was found to be most rapid in young people.
Renee Goodwin, PhD, is from the Department of Epidemiology, Mailman School of Public Health. He spearheaded the research, and suggests depression appears to be increasing among Americans overall, and especially among youth.
He added that depression affects a significant percentage of the American population, and is even found to have serious individual and societal consequences.
“It is important to understand whether and how the prevalence of depression has changed over time so that trends can inform public health and outreach efforts,” he said.
In the United States, the depression was found to have increased significantly from 6.6 percent to 7.3 percent from 2005 to 2015.
The most rapid increase is among those who were 12 to 17 years of age within 2005 to 2015. During this span of time, there was an increase from 8.7 percent to 12.7 percent
Scientists got their data from the 607,520 respondents to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. This is an annual U.S. study of persons ages 12 and over.
It has further been found that the increased rates of depression were more rapid among the Caucasians, youngest and oldest age groups, the lowest income and highest income groups, and those with the highest education levels.
This coincides with the recent findings on increases in drug use, deaths due to drug overdose, and suicide.
The researchers further found there was no increase in the treatment of depression. There is also a growing number of people in the United States who are suffering from untreated depression.
This has been found to be especially true to the socioeconomically vulnerable individuals and young persons.
More studies are still underway to explore more of the high prevalence of depression, and how it can be addressed properly. There are natural ingredients found to be particularly help against this brain disorder, and one is ashwagandha.
In some research studies, it has been found to have a great potential to fight depression.
As a matter of fact in a controlled 60-day study involving stressed adults, it was found that intake of this natural ingredient led to reduction in depression by 79 percent. The dose of ashwagandha was 600 mg administered on a daily basis.
The placebo group, on the other hand, only got a 10 percent increase.
