Emerging Study Reveals Yoga and Physical Therapy Enhance Sleep

(Newswire.net — October 6, 2022) Orlando, FL — Various research studies have revealed that certain remedies are beneficial for sleep improvement. It is worth keeping in mind that today, more and more people are having trouble sleeping.

A study has shown that both yoga and physical therapy (PT) are effective in treating co-occurring sleep disturbance and back pain. At the same time, they lessen the need for medication.

This new study from Boston Medical Center (BMC) was published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Research has demonstrated significant improvements in sleep quality that lasted 52 weeks after 12 weeks of yoga classes or 1-on-1 PT. This suggests a long-term benefit of these non-pharmacologic approaches.

Further, participants with early improvements in pain after 6 weeks of treatment were found to be three and a half times more likely to have sleep improvements following the full, 12-week treatment. This highlights that pain and sleep are closely related.

Previous research has shown that 59 percent of individuals with cLBP experience poor sleep quality and 53 percent are diagnosed with insomnia disorder.

“Identifying holistic ways to treat these conditions could help decrease the reliance on these medications as well as keep patients safer and more comfortable,” said Eric Roseen, DC, MSc, a researcher in the department of family medicine at BMC, who led the study.

This randomized controlled trial involved 320 adults with cLBP from BMC and seven surrounding community health centers. At the start of the study, more than 90 percent of the subjects with cLBP were found to have poor sleep.

Subjects were assigned one of three different therapies for cLBP, namely physical therapy, weekly yoga, or reading educational materials.

“This really emphasizes the need for providers to ask patients with chronic low back pain about the quality of their sleep. Given the serious risks of combining pain and sleep medications, nonpharmacologic approaches should be considered for these patients,” said Roseen, also an assistant professor of family medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.

Aside from yoga and physical therapy, there are actually many other remedies found helpful for sleep improvement. There are even medicinal kitchen ingredients like lion’s mane that may be helpful.
