It was found that the participants who took fish oil experienced significantly fewer symptoms of postpartum depression than the placebo group. The fish oil group also reported lesser anxiety symptoms.
Michelle Price Judge, PhD, RD, a faculty member at the University of Connecticut School of Nursing, revealed that intake of regulated amounts of DHA during the period of pregnancy may potentially decrease the postpartum depression symptoms.
Consumption of fish is often highly recommended, but there are also fish oil supplements available. Supplements are thought to contain higher amounts of omega-3s and may have little to no environmental pollutants such as mercury.
