Going through your days without a sense of purpose will ultimately result in unhappiness.
The repetition of menial tasks, day after day, adds up to a monotony that can become unbearable. Identifying and working diligently with a purpose adds meaning, passion, and intention to every action you take.
Purpose is just as vital to a business as it is to an individual.
Definitions:
PURPOSE is defined as the reason something is done. It is what you intend to do; a plan or aim. It is your determination.
BASIC is defined as forming an essential foundation or starting point, a fundamental or essential part.
A person or business could have several purposes, but the basic purpose would form the foundation. For example, the marketing department of a company may have a slightly different purpose to the finance department of the same company, but the underlying basic purpose would be the same.
It is the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. It is the “why.” Why are we doing this? What is the reason our company does what it does?
When a company has a clearly stated purpose, and it is known and understood by the entire organization, there is a tangible and noticeable energy in the air. Employees are upbeat and enthusiastic about their jobs. They feel like they’re a part of something. Compare that to a company that does not operate this way, and it is just as noticeable. It is far less energetic and filled with employees who are punching the clock.
The pandemic has led to employees realizing they don’t have to work in a company that lacks purpose. Nearly two-thirds of US-based employees we surveyed said that COVID-19 has caused them to reflect on their purpose in life. And nearly half said that they are reconsidering the kind of work they do because of the pandemic.
Employees expect a sense of purpose
A recent McKinsey study showed that employees expect their jobs to bring a significant sense of purpose to their lives. Employers need to help meet this need or be prepared to lose talent to companies that will.
The importance of clarifying the basic purpose of a business should not be undervalued or discounted. People who live their purpose at work are more productive than people who don’t. They are also healthier, more resilient, and more likely to stay at the company. All very valid reasons to connect your sense of company purpose to your bottom line.
The study shows that when employees feel that their purpose is aligned with the organization’s purpose, the benefits expand to include stronger employee engagement, heightened loyalty, and a greater willingness to recommend the company to others.
And that’s not even going into the value of the purpose itself. For instance, if the owner of a small business has a purpose for the company to make him rich, then that’s not a particularly viable or worthwhile purpose for the rest of the group. You can predict some unhappiness down the road when the owner starts to use company money to pay for his swimming pool and shiny cars.
But if that same owner of a company decides that their basic purpose is to be of some value to the community, then you’ll find the members of that business will get behind that purpose and start to work with some meaning and passion in furthering that purpose and accomplishing their goals as a group. And by doing so they may be heralding a new age of success and prosperity for their enterprise and group.
