Quality Discount Tires – When To Replace Tires To Ensure Safe Vacations

(Newswire.net — June 10, 2014) Raleigh, NC — Automobile tires are considered one of the most important components of our cars. Tires are the only thing that come into contact with our cars and the road, and a questionable tire will affect your car’s ride comfort, handling and safety.

When it comes to yours, and your family’s safety, make sure to check your tires regularly for abnormal wear or damage. To ensure maximum tire life, give your tires a visual inspection at least once a month and before long trips. This is easily done at the same time you check pressures. Look for:

  1. Excessive or uneven tread wear, which may indicate improper inflation or steering and suspension misalignment;
  2. Cracks or bulges on the sidewalls or tread;
  3. Chunking of the tread or any indication of tread separation from the carcass;
  4. Signs of puncture, or nails, screws, glass, pieces of stone or any foreign object imbedded in the tire.

If you detect any of these conditions, take the vehicle into your mechanic for further examination immediately. In most cases, punctures can be repaired if their size is not too large.

Unknown to most car owners, under inflation is the leading cause of tire failure. Not only are under inflated tires more susceptible to damage and failure, but they can lead to higher fuel costs by as much as 4 to 8¢ per gallon.

Quoting Mike Barker, Owner/Manager of North Hills Exxon, “Out of all things on a car, safety-wise, when people are getting ready for vacation, the number one most important thing is tires. That, and alignment, and good shocks & struts on a car are a big deal, especially it has a 100,000 miles on it or so.” When asked which quality discount tires he likes best, Mike said,  “I’m a Micheline fan at heart, and I think they are the very best, no doubt. Next to it, I like the BF Goodrich and the Uniroyals, depending on your price point.”

When replacing car tires, it’s recommened that you follow the auto manufacturer’s recommendations. They typically include specifications for:

  1. tire size
  2. tire pressure – Under inflation is the leading cause of tire failure.
  3. tread wear / life
  4. traction ratings
  5. temperature ratings

And if you are replacing only two new tires, placing them on the rear is best (helps prevents overs stearing).
