In this genetic analysis in a small laboratory fish model, the investigating team was able to identify a small protein, the chemokine CXCL9. It is worth noting that under osteoporotic conditions, this small protein diffuses towards reservoirs, which hold bone-resorbing cell precursors.
The precursors produced on their cell surface are called CXCR3. It is worth keeping in mind that both
CXCL9 and its receptor CXCR3 have long been identified to modulate immune cell migration to inflammation sites.
“The new strategy allows a fine-tuned modulation of osteoclast numbers that are recruited to bone matrix rather than a widespread blockage of osteoclast activity as in traditional therapies,” said professors Schartl and Winkler.
