Research Shows How a 5-Minute Breathing Workout Produces Benefits

This new CU Boulder research was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

It actually provides the strongest evidence suggesting that the ultra-time-efficient maneuver known as High-Resistance Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training (IMST) may play a major role in helping aging adults ward off cardiovascular disease — the nation’s leading killer.

It is important to stress that in the United States alone, 65 percent of adults beyond the age of 50 have above-normal blood pressure. This places them at a heightened risk of heart attack or stroke. However, fewer than 40 percent were found to meet recommended aerobic exercise guidelines.

“There are a lot of lifestyle strategies that we know can help people maintain cardiovascular health as they age. But the reality is, they take a lot of time and effort and can be expensive and hard for some people to access,” said lead author Daniel Craighead.

Craighead is an assistant research professor in the Department of Integrative Physiology. 

“IMST can be done in five minutes in your own home while you watch TV.”

The IMST was developed in the 1980s as a way to aid individuals with critically ill respiratory diseases strengthen their diaphragm and other breathing muscles. It involves vigorous inhalation through the use of a hand-held device providing resistance.
