Research Warns Sleep Disorders Tally $94.9 Billion in Health Care Costs Annually

The researchers looked into the differences in health expenditures in similar patients with and without a sleep disorder diagnosis, which is determined by their ICD-10 diagnosis code. 

It included data from a nationally-representative survey involving over 22,000 Americans called the 2018 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, which is administered by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

They particularly found 5.6 percent of respondents had at least one sleep disorder, and this translated to an estimated 13.6 million U.S. adults. 

It is worth noting that insomnia alone seems to affect 10 to 20 percent of the U.S. population, and they accumulated roughly $7,000 more in overall health care expenses per year compared to those without a sleep disorder.

The investigators further note that this equates to a conservative estimate of $94.9 billion in health care costs every year attributable to sleep disorders.
