Sign Language Interpreting Done Right In Movie Recognized For Triumph

Power Source Magazine’s December 2013 issue recognized Darla Rae’s “Spirit of Love” movie, the 2013 winner of the Inspirational Country Music Awards Faith, Family and Country Award.  The movie highlighted the fact that communication is the key, and that even with deaf and hard-of-hearing participants in the film and audiences looking for movies that can be enjoyed by all, this movie delivered.

“Spirit of Love” was inspired by the true life story of NBA great Mike “Stinger” Glenn whose basketball camps for the deaf and hard-of-hearing teenagers have impacted the lives of kids from all across the United States. For 34 years this camps has brought together thousands of youth who would never get to go to camps, let alone learn life lessons through the game of basketball.  The kids learn to understand and embrace differences and grow as individuals while dealing with issues of communication, sportsmanship and team activities.

 

The movie “Spirit of Love” had dozens of ASL (American Sign Language) interpreters during the filming and preparation involved in making sure everyone understood the process of filmmaking. Most of the cast had never been involved in any type of arts, film or stage, so they were all learning what may become an outlet for creative endeavors or possibly a vocation for some. It is the first commercially viable Open Captioned family film produced and recognized in this space.
