(Newswire.net — January 26, 2021) Orlando, FL — According to the Academy of Dermatology, there are between 40 and 50 million people in the United States with mild to moderate acne.
Experts say that this skin condition usually starts developing during puberty. As a matter of fact, it affects nearly 100 percent of teenagers. However, it is also worth mentioning that acne is actually not restricted to any age group.
Dermatologists reveal that pimples develop when the oil glands of the face overproduce oil. When this is combined with dead skin cells, the hair follicles and pores are blocked. This triggers bacteria to develop in the clogged follicles and pores, which cause a breakout.
It is important to be warned that outside triggers have been found to worsen breakouts. These include hormones, heredity causes, and environmental factors, which can all determine how the breakout will turn out.
There are also other factors like diet, exercise, and stress. Experts strongly warn against the material factors that could also contribute to the development of acne, such as used yoga mats, a dirty cell phone, and pillowcases.
Some antioxidants like resveratrol have long been studied due to their remarkable acne-fighting potentials.
In human trials, researchers found resveratrol gel was found useful in the treatment of acne. Researchers suggest this antioxidant inhibits the growth of the Propionibacterium acnes.
In some studies, it has been found resveratrol was able to improve the bacteria-fighting ability of benzoyl peroxide.
The University of California, Los Angeles, carried out this laboratory study.
In this research, it is further revealed that resveratrol was able to inhibit bacterial growth for a prolonged period.
When researchers cultured human skin cells and blood cells with the two compounds to test toxicity, they found resveratrol was less cytotoxic than benzoyl peroxide. Combining the compounds resulted in prolonged antibacterial effects, while minimizing skin cell toxicity.
According to Emma Taylor, M.D., the real importance of this study is that it shows that resveratrol (an antioxidant) and benzoyl peroxide (an oxidant) actually have enhanced and sustained antibacterial activity.
Taylor is the study’s first author and an assistant clinical professor of medicine in the division of dermatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
The study was funded by the Women’s Dermatologic Society and National Institutes of Health.
