Obama’s Gun Control Proposals: Will the Government Take Your Guns?

(Newswire.net — March 8, 2013) Las Vegas, Nevada — In the wake of recent gun related tragedies both the President and Washington lawmakers have set their sights on gun control.  Although the most fervent attention is currently being paid to banning military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, the second part of Obama’s gun control proposal is broadening the existing background checks on gun buyers.

The issue of whether to keep records of private gun sales has struck fear into the heart of many a gun owner in America as they wonder just how far new gun control legislation may reach.  Republican lawmakers fear such recordkeeping would be the first step to a government register of gun owners.

Many law abiding gun owners, including former Marine Joshua Boston, fear legislative measures requiring registration of firearms could result in government confiscation of all firearms, not just military-style assault weapons.  According to a January 4, 2013 CNN.com news release Boston stated he “believes the government does not need to know what guns he owns [and] he believes weapons registration would lead to confiscation.”

Fear of overreaching legislation leading to gun confiscation by the government has led to a boom in new and used gun sales across the nation.  Kris McCormack of Ultimate Auctioneers based in Las Vegas, Nevada says that the pace of gun sales has been brisk in recent months.  McCormack points out that all Ultimate Auctioneers firearms sales are performed through a federally licensed firearms dealer and all buyers must be able to pass a firearm background check.
