3 Bizarre Heating Alternatives From The Field

(Newswire.net — May 18, 2014) Toronto, Ontario — When it is the dead of winter and your furnace kicks out due to technical or financial issues, the answer is not to be desperate. Contact a respected and certified HVAC company and discuss options, rather than create your own and often hazardous heating situation.

The following are the encountered (and often dangerous) heating experiences witnessed in the field of residential home heating by a local heating and air conditioning company in the Greater Toronto Area. They are being shared for learning purpose, not as recommendations.

1) The Frat House: the property owner booked a general inspection for the furnace unit at a fraternity house on a local university’s campus, and the technician discovered an interesting heating setup that was rigged by the students living there. They purchased exhaust tubing from a hardware store and secured it to their Dryer unit’s exhaust, then ran the line into the desired room to heat.

There are obvious dangers involved in this creative setup, and it is a fire hazard. The property owner tore the make-shift device down and had a discussion with the inventive students.

2) The Plastic House: the property reported furnace issues during the winter months, and the technician found a vintage unit that had ceased to work. It had not been turned on for two or more years, all mechanical issues, required a furnace replacement. What the homeowner implemented was wallpapering and insulating everything with sliced up plastic bags, even shading out sunlight from windows.

Besides an outdated furnace unit and the economical and environmental issues there, the air quality in the home was poor due to lack of ventilation.

3) Power bars and heated blankets: the homeowners had a total of fifteen heated blankets scattered through the home, on various couches, chairs and beds. They were even falling asleep with multiple blankets on. Mylar heat retention blankets were also abundant. There are extreme fire warnings noted when using heat blankets and should never be left unattended.

These anecdotal examples of creative alternatives to heating your residence serve as a testimony of what not to do when your furnace stops functioning. It is always recommended to contact your local HVAC company when your unit needs repair or maintenance.

All above cases are used for a testimonial purpose and if it resembles anything you’ve tried or done, it is merely coincidence.
